Istnienie grzybów zaobserwowano we wszystkich strefach klimatycznych, przede wszystkim na lądach, ale także w wodach (słodkich i słonych). Do 2020 r. opisano około 148 tysięcy gatunków grzybów, rzeczywista ich liczba jest jednak dużo wyższa. Co roku opisuje się około 2 tysięcy nowych gatunków.
