Researchers re-checked whether Europe's free Sentinel-2 satellites can measure water quality in a muddy estuary — using only open-source, freely available software instead of expensive commercial tools.
What they measured: Two different things about the water, both from space: how muddy it is (called turbidity) and how much algae is in it (measured as chlorophyll-a). They compared the satellite's answers against real measurements taken in the water itself.
What they found: The results split cleanly. For muddiness, the free open-source method worked very well — as good as, and slightly better than, the paid commercial software the original study used. For algae, the same method did not work: in this murky estuary water it could not reliably tell how much chlorophyll-a was present.
